Mono Lake is located in the Owens Valley in California; West of Death Valley and East of Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is one of the oldest lakes in the western hemisphere. The most distinctive feature is its eerie tufa towers. These are mineral structures created when fresh-water springs bubble up through the alkaline waters of the lake.
